Labor disputes are set to disrupt operations at several of Northern Europe's largest ports. Dockworkers at major German ports are in the midst of a rolling strike that will continue until this Friday (September 4), and just as that action comes to an end, strikes in the Netherlands will begin.

According to foreign media reports, a serious crane accident occurred at the Mumbai Port terminal in India on the evening of August 30. Two truck-mounted cranes involved in cargo lifting operations were hoisting a heavy load of approximately 140 tons when the slings slipped, causing the cargo to become unstable. The cranes subsequently toppled over, collided with each other, and sparked a fire, injuring two operators and temporarily disrupting port cargo operations.

Recently, the international port code "CNLYI" for Linyi was officially released globally upon approval by the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT). In the code, "CN" stands for China, and "LYI" stands for Linyi. The approval of this code marks that Linyi has officially obtained its "international identity" for participation in global trade, and is now internationally recognised as a "port of departure" and "port of destination" with acknowledged status.
Nine-day strike causes US$1.621 billion loss in port cargo freight
According to foreign media citing reports from Pakistani export industry representatives, a nine-day nationwide cargo transport strike has severely impacted the country's export-oriented sectors—including high-value-added textiles, knitwear, ready-made garments, leather clothing, and towels—which have expressed serious concerns over the abnormal surge in ocean freight rates and the acute shortage of container slots. The strike is estimated to have caused losses of up to 450 billion Pakistani rupees (approximately US$1.621 billion) during the period.

German shipping group Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with APM Terminals to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II B.V. Upon completion of the transaction, APM Terminals will retain operational control of the Maasvlakte II terminal.

Recently, a cargo vessel carrying 558 units of mechanical vehicles and complete sets of construction engineering materials departed from Shandong Port's Yantai Port for Ghana, West Africa. This marks the first time that the annual shipment volume of Yantai Port's China-Africa break-bulk cargo liner service has exceeded 6 million metric tons, reaching the milestone four months ahead of schedule and surpassing the full-year target of 5.81 million tons set for 2025. The volume represents a year-on-year increase of 66.1%, with an average of 30 sailings per month—the highest frequency among such services nationwide—further solidifying the two-way corridor that connects China's advanced manufacturing capacity with Africa's development needs and contributing Shandong Port's strength to the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Gulftainer Upgrades Khorfakkan Port, Targets 10M+ TEU Capacity in Long Term
According to the Sharjah Ports, Customs, and Free Zones Authority, UAE terminal operator Gulftainer is advancing the expansion of the Khorfakkan Commercial Container Terminal, increasing its existing annual throughput capacity from 3.5 million TEU to 5 million TEU, with a long-term target capacity of over 10 million TEU.
